As a gamer, I embrace gaming as a tool that can be used in therapy to allow a person to express their strengths, creativity, & voice they've been hiding inside. By using video games to better connect and share our struggles, we can help each other heal, while having fun along the way. Roblox has been a great game used as an online counseling game and a rapport-building activity in the age of therapy telehealth. It's a game that helped me build that bridge for connection as I was building rapport with kids for the first time over telehealth when COVID19 forced us to quarantine at our homes. At the time, it was a groundbreaking way to adapt to the physical distancing requirement while helping my clients navigate the collective trauma we were all experiencing. It was so unique that The Washington Post featured me in their "Road To Recovery" section. To read the article about how the kids benefited from using Roblox in play therapy, click here. To share the knowledge of how play therapy over telehealth and video games can be used, I created my first Youtube video as a demonstration. I'll be making more as my editing and recording skills improve so be sure to subscribe to catch the next one. Here's my first video, "How To Use Roblox Adopt Me! In Therapy Sessions" https://youtu.be/DnQMC8ZlrOs In this video, I give a brief overview of how to play Roblox, how to start with a "feelings check-in" with the character, and use insight building around self-care activities for kids! My goal for this video is to help therapists become comfortable with Roblox so they can be more present with the people they work with. Roblox has been a great opportunity for me to deliver child and play therapy techniques virtually, as we continue to physically distant from each other. At the least, it's a great rapport-building activity in therapy and telehealth. Along with providing therapy and counseling through telehealth, I also off video game consulting services as a video game consultant to help therapists and companies leverage the great tools and activities created freely for us to enjoy.
